VMware Announcement Day

So I know the internet is going to be flooded with blogs about all the announcements from VMware today and I have a few I will release over the next days/weeks as to be fair I want to see if I can get some real world handle on some of these new things if possible. So today it was VMware officially announced the Tanzu Portfolio which consists of

  • Tanzu Mission Control
  • VMware Cloud Foundation 4
  • VMware vSphere 7
  • VMware vSAN 7,
  • VMware vRealize Automation 8.1 and VMware vRealize Operations 8.1

Basically my TLDR for today really is VMware are really trying to help the modern day administrator like me be that in a small company where you look after anything that might even have a plug on to the larger players trying to deliver the cutting edge apps that your customers desires (of which you still probably have to fix the coffee machine).

Our work lives despite in ways becoming easier they are getting more complex in managing such as vast array of services with the introduction of the cloud. I have even gone from managing a few data centres to that and now several clouds and availability zones of a description in each of them to ensure out applications and services stay online.

Trying to stay on top of all this can be hard at the best of time but I think every element in the Tanzu portfolio will aid you in one way or another be that direct as you run this or even else where such as your files being hosted in the cloud somewhere on VSAN. Even adding account to vRealize operations manager looks so simple why would you not do this

Another thing for me is slowly abstracting away servers and running things as a service and File Services on vSAN is interesting for me as for an edge site this could be ideal as it expands as I would not need a local traditional file server running or maybe I can easily created a dev environment locally of what is on a cloud service at present

Another must have for everyone I think is VMware Skyline of which has been supported since 6.7 which can provide great insight into your vSphere & VSAN cluster health

At the time of me writing this post the dates I was provided for release were as follows VMware Tanzu Application Catalog, VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid and VMware Tanzu Mission Control are all available today. VMware Cloud Foundation 4, VMware vSphere 7, VMware vSAN 7, VMware vRealize Automation 8.1 and VMware vRealize Operations 8.1 (both on-premises and as SaaS) are all expected to become available by May 1, 2020 (the end of VMware’s Q1 Fiscal Year 2021).

As I said above I hope to expand significantly on the above points as and when things get released into the wild but it certainly looks to be an exciting year for anyone in the cloud and even more so if you still run your own kit and are due an upgrade.
